Step 2 – Selecting the Output Quality

Choose Video Quality

This page allows you to set the amount of compression applied to the video file – the greater the compression, the smaller the file but the less ‘clear’ it will look.

If you intend to share your video by uploading it to a website or emailing to a friend, then the ‘Sharing’ column will squeeze things down as quickly as possible, with an emphasis on the smallest possible file-sizes at the expense of quality.

If you’re just interested in saving space on your hard disk but don’t intend sharing your videos, then we’d recommend choosing a setting from the ‘Archiving’ column; although these settings can’t compress the video anywhere nearly as much as the ‘Sharing’ settings they preserve far more detail but take longer to process.

Below is a summary of each individual quality setting :

Converter Type Video quality Data Rate calculation Audio quality
Sharing Low Quality 320x240 @15fps

Apprx 150Kbits/sec =
18Kb/sec =
1Mb/min of video

Audio: Mono, 44KHz
(20 Kbits/sec)
Sharing Medium Quality 320x240 @30fps Apprx 300Kbits/sec =
36Kb/sec =
2Mb/min of video
Audio: Stereo, 44KHz (48Kbits/sec)
Sharing High Quality 320x240 @30fps Apprx 780Kbits/sec =
96Kb/sec =
5.7Mb/min of video
Audio: Stereo, 44KHz
(96 Kbits/sec)
Archiving Low Quality 640x480 @30fps Apprx 835Kbits/sec =
102Kb/sec =
6.1Mb/min of video
Audio: Stereo, 44KHz (320Kbits/sec)
Archiving Medium Quality 640x480 @30fps Apprx 1.3Mbits/sec =
160Kb/sec =
9.6Mb/min of video
Audio: Stereo, 44KHz (320Kbits/sec)
Archiving High Quality 720x576 @30fps Apprx 2.5Mbits/sec =
300Kb/sec =
18Mb/min of video
Audio: Stereo, 44KHz (320Kbits/sec)

Don’t worry if you’re not sure which setting to use – it’s easy to experiment, and your original video file will never be overwritten, so you can keep trying different settings to find the one that suits your needs best.
